Getting to Germaine’s Luau from Waikiki

Germaine’s is in Kapolei, 25 to 30 miles west of Waikiki on Oahu’s leeward coast. That distance is why it has a real beach and a real sunset, and also why transport is the one thing to plan. Here are the three ways to get there.

The luau coach (the easy way)

The round-trip coach costs $35 per person on the Makai and Original packages and is included with Plumeria (reserve your seat at least 24 hours ahead). Pickups run from Waikiki between 4:00 and 4:30 PM: Ala Moana Hotel (Mahukona Street entrance, 4:00), ABC Store #83 by the Grand Waikikian (4:05), La Croix Hotel (4:10), Seaside Avenue in front of Ross (4:20), the back of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki on Koa Avenue (4:25) and Twin Fin on Paoakalani Avenue next to the trolley sign (4:30). The ride takes 45 to 60 minutes, often with a driver who narrates island history on the way, and the return bus boards around 8:30 PM. Confirm your stop with the operator after booking.

Driving yourself

Take H-1 west to exit 1 (Campbell Industrial Park), follow Kalaeloa Boulevard toward the ocean and turn right on Olai Street; the luau is at 91-119 Olai Street, Kapolei, HI 96707. Parking is $5 cash per car (free with Plumeria) and stalls are limited, so arrive by 5:30. Leave Waikiki by 4:00 PM on weekdays: reviewers report up to 90 minutes in rush-hour traffic. The last stretch runs through an industrial park, which looks wrong but is right. And the big one: enter the street address, not the business name, which sends GPS and rideshare drivers to the Waikiki sales office.

Uber, Lyft and taxis

Rideshare works on the way out (roughly 40 minutes without traffic), again using the street address. The way back is the weak point: at 8:30 PM, dozens of guests are calling cars to an industrial area, and waits can be long. For most visitors without a car the coach is cheaper and simpler.
